MAY 26, 2025
In her book Women Who Run with the Wolves, Clarissa Pinkola Estés writes,
The ogress, the witch, the wild nature, and whatever other criaturas and integral aspects the culture finds awful in the psyches of women are the very blessed things which women often need most to retrieve and bring to the surface.
What are the blessed things that live just under the surface for you? Those things that want to be invited out to breathe and stretch and play?
If you’re not sure, reflect on what aspects of yourself, what desires, you have quietly put away over your lifetime because they weren’t welcomed by the people around you, your community, or the dominant culture.
Consider trying a new spiritual practice that would be one step toward welcoming your wild nature out to play in some small way:
Turn off screens and sounds, close your eyes, and savor a favorite food
Dig your toes into dirt, sand, or grass, or wade out into the water
Sing (the louder the better!)
Move your body in a new way - go to a different kind of exercise class or search YouTube (belly dancing tutorial, anyone?)
You’ve been told that the wildness in you is a threat. But the reality is, it’s not a threat to you or even to the individuals who fear it. It’s a threat to the oppressive systems and structures we live in. Your wildness is a threat to capitalism because your wild self doesn’t self-soothe by buying stuff. Your wildness is a threat to racism and white supremacy because your wild self is a fierce protector of all people and deeply antagonistic toward racial hierarchy.
On this dark strawberry moon, follow those inner nudges of your wild soul. Start small if you need to. Allow your desire to be your guide.
Meditate on Your Desire
Here is a guided meditation to help you identify and befriend your desire. Get into a comfortable position, sitting or laying down. Close your eyes, and tap into where your desire wants to take you.
Reflect & Share
After engaging in this practice, spend some time reflecting on the experience. As always, I encourage you to not only reflect within yourself, but to take this opportunity to nurture your relationships by sharing with others.
Does the object of your desire change how you feel about your desire? For example, a new car versus forgiveness from a friend. If so, why is that?
What is your relationship with longing? And what do you think has influenced this relationship?
Where does your longing want to lead you in this season?
Who in your life can you be honest about your desires with?
What is something you long for on behalf of other people? And how do you let that longing inform your life?
Join me
Want to join others in this practice? Join the Wild Maven community in-person on the day after the New Strawberry Moon, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in Edmonds, Washington. We’ll also be joined by special guest astrologer Alyssa Marie Samson who will do participants’ birth charts and teach us about what our birth charts can tell us about our relationships with desire.
Or work with me one-on-one. I offer virtual spiritual counseling sessions where you can process your spiritual or religious experiences, explore your beliefs, and/or discover new practices - which could include things like engaging with nature in new and different ways - or anything else you’re curious about!
