Centering

Get settled in a seated position. If you’re comfortable, close your eyes or soften your gaze.

Focus your attention on the base of your spine, your root chakra. Feel the energy flowing from it and allow it to root you to your seat. Lengthen your spine upward and breathe deeply in and out as you shift your focus to your sacral chakra, just below your belly button. From there, travel upward through your chakras, noticing your energy as it flows up your center line. Solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, and finally the crown of your head.

Take two more deep breaths. When you’re ready, open your eyes.

Learning

You may recall from the dark moon what an intense and sometimes gory process bucks go through in growing and shedding their antlers each year. In some species, antlers can grow up to three centimeters or an inch and a half a day. Each year, an individual’s antlers tend to get bigger and more complex until the animal reaches their peak size. And the best fun fact is that this could be considered the equivalent of us growing a third arm every summer. And then of course it would just drop off when we were done with it.

So if not a third arm, what are we growing in this season?

One of my favorite teachings on nurturing creative energy comes from the book Wild Feminine, by Tami Lynn Kent. Because Kent primarily uses words such as women, wombs, and ovaries, her book may not be for everyone. But whatever of your body parts and your primary gender identity, I invite you to consider embracing the feminine aspects that we all possess as full and complex human beings. I’ve adapted her language for inclusivity in this paraphrase of her ideas:

When you create with joy, you draw energy in (feminine movement) to yourself and put it out (masculine movement) into the world in a new and creative form. You might write, dance, teach, parent, design, or build. Whatever you produce, when it is playful and dynamic, creative energy is moving through your pelvic space. When we love our bodies and embrace this flow, we create art that invites others to flourish as well.
